Botswana on 4th position in ICC Africa U19s World Cup Qualifiers

botswana u19 team

Botswana go down to Uganda in the 3rd placing playoff at Kyambogo Oval and will now finish 4th overall in this qualifiers and more importantly retain their place in Africa’s top division.

Losing the toss, Botswana were sent in to field and the young Sky Blues could not have asked for a better start when they had Uganda 14-3, with a great opening spell once again by Aarnav Ram. Uganda’s much more experienced players steadied the ship and after a great recovery, Uganda ended up on 245-7 off their 50 overs. Dhruv Maisuriya the pick of the bowlers for Botswana with 10 overs 2 wickets for 31 runs.

Botswana in their chase started well with a steady 30 run partnership but tight bowling from Uganda and also inexperience playing at this level shown by the Botswana team started to tell as Uganda went on to clean Botswana up for 125 in 41.4 overs.

In the playoff match for a spot in the U19s World Cup, Namibia pulled the rabbit out of the hat to win their match vs Kenya. Kenya having restricted Namibia to only 173 runs after bowling them out, were looking on their way to the World Cup with 110-4 on the board.Namibian opening bowler, JJ Smit was reintroduced and took a hat-trick which reduced Kenya to 110-7 and paved the way for Namibia to bowl the Kenyans out for 121, setting up a 52 run victory.

Keeping in mind that Botswana were on average the youngest team in this tournament (16.7 years old) with only two players over the age of 18, the team has performed extremely well to finish in the top 4 and with a good number of players from this team still eligible to represent Botswana U19s in the next edition of qualifiers and should be able to come back stronger and more experienced by then.

As coach, I would like to thank my young team and also let them know that I am extremely proud of them and the future for Botswana cricket is indeed bright. (Arjun Menon)
